Vines Nerello Mascalese ( %)

Color: Crystal clear soft pink.
Smell: The nose expresses delicate floral hints of wisteria accompanied by pleasant fruity notes of plum and pink grapefruit.
Taste: In the mouth it has great freshness and minerality, excellent balance and persistence with citrus aromas.
Food pairing: Perfect with raw crustaceans, vegetarian dishes, fresh cheeses, dishes of Asian cuisine not too spicy and white meats.

Production area: Eastern Sicily, north side of Etna, between Randazzo and Castiglione di Sicilia (CT).
Soil and climate: Altitude from 730 to 750 m a.s.l .; the composition of the lava soil with sandy texture offers a subacid-neutral reaction, with good organic endowment. Deep, rich in minerals, the lava soil allows a strong radical expansion. This area north of the volcano is characterized by rainfall below the average of the other slopes of Etna. Summers are cool, characterized by strong temperature variations between day and night.
Vineyard: Tree or counter-espalier training with spurred cordon pruning. Density of about 4,500 plants per hectare with yields of 45 - 65 quintals / hectare.
Vintage 2019: The 2019 vintage was fresh and with an average rainfall; a typical Etna vintage with rainfall recorded also in spring and summer, quite usual for vineyards over 700 m. above sea level; in particular, some rains between mid-August and early September exalted freshness and aromaticity.
On this side of the volcano the following weeks were dry; this climatic factor together with the choice to carry out some thinning have favored the desired maturation and the regular development of the harvest. The white and rosé wines of 2019 are particularly fragrant and with an excellent acid structure, the elegant red wines with soft tannins.
Harvest: Manual, in boxes, with selection of the bunches; to enhance the freshness of Sul Vulcano rosato, the harvest takes place about 1-2 weeks in advance of that of the grapes destined for the production of red wines; in 2019 the collection in the various plots took place from 5 to 12 October.
Vinification: Cold maceration in press for 6-12 hours at 10 ° C followed by fermentation in steel, at controlled temperature.
Aging: In the tank for 3 months and at least 2 months in the bottle before being marketed.

 

 


Donnafugata

Donnafugata was born in Sicily from the initiative of a family that with great passion has been able to revolutionize the style and perception of Sicilian wine in the world. The name Donnafugata refers to the novel by Tomasi di Lampedusa the Leopard. A name that means "woman on the run" and refers to the story of a queen who found refuge in that part of Sicily where the company vineyards are located today. A story that inspired the company logo: the image of a woman's head with her hair blowing in the wind that stands out on each bottle. The Rallo family back in 1851 entered the world of wine in Sicily in the wake of British entrepreneurs In 1983 Giacomo and Gabriella donfano Donnafugata, a name that communicates with art. A new style for Sicilian wines In 1990 Giacomo and Gabriella were joined by their sons José and Antonio and the company increasingly sought pleasure, elegance and longevity in the wines.
