Taittinger is one of the largest champagne houses in the world based in Reims, in the Champagne-Ardenne region. The Taittinger brand was born in 1932 when Pierre Taittinger acquired the castle of the Marquis, with which it acquired the pre-existing Forest-Fourneaux company, founded in 1734 by Jacques Fourneaux. These had worked closely with the Benedictine monks, who at the time owned most of the surrounding vineyards. Previous owners also include the philosopher Jacques Cazotte who died guillotined during the Terror regime. The Taittingers were wine merchants who moved to Champagne from Lorraine in 1870. The growth of the company since the post-war period and today has been continuous but the greatest impulse is due to Claude Taittinger who directed it from 1960 to 2005 bringing the brand to the top of the world. Taittinger is characterized by the prevalent use of Chardonnay. Other grape varieties allowed for champagne such as Pinot Noir are sold in lower percentages than those of the main competing brands.
