Villa Matilde
The story of Villa Matilde begins in the sixties with Francesco Paolo Avallone, lawyer and passionate lover of ancient wines, who, intrigued by the stories of Pliny and by the verses of Virgil, Martial and Horace on the vinum Falernum, decided to bring the legendary wine back to life disappeared at the beginning of the last century. Assisted by a group of friends, including some teachers of the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Naples, he identified, after years of study, the vines that had given birth to Falerno in Roman times: a few strains miraculously survived the devastation of the end phylloxera Eight hundred were replanted, with the help of a few local farmers, right in the territory of the Massico where they once prospered and founded Villa Matilde. Today the company is led by the sons of Francesco Paolo, Maria Ida and Salvatore Avallone who with exclusive dedication continue the father's dream and project by collecting their important legacy and looking even further: from Ager Falernus they went to the provinces of Benevento and Avellino with new vineyards, new projects and wines that tell the strong identity of Campania Felix. In 2000 Villa Matilde inaugurated Tenuta Rocca dei Leoni and in 2004 Tenuta d’Altavilla, respectively in the heart of the Sannio Benevento and in the Docg Irpine district, in the province of Avellino, starting the production of new wines. The importance of quality is the first rule: Villa Matilde focuses on class, it does not produce serial wines, but elite wines appreciated by those who know about wine. At the same time, the quality of the grapes produced here and the extremely high quality standards do not translate into prohibitive costs. The link with the culture and traditions of the area is therefore the principle of history and the foundation of the philosophy of this company. Respect for the environment and a wide open gaze on innovation are its new strengths. Constant research and cutting-edge technologies color tradition with intelligent and dynamic innovation attentive to the protection of the territory. The "Zero Emissions" project was born from the desire to demonstrate that wine can be produced with a view to reducing the environmental impact with the use of the most modern technologies for containing consumption. Vineyards with a planting density of seven thousand vines per hectare are grown in Guyot. The wine, at Villa Matilde, is made the object of study and research for the identification of the vines that had once given birth to the oldest wines of this land, such as Aglianico, that is the ancient Hellenic; the Piedirosso from which, together with Aglianico itself, Falerno Rosso is obtained; the Falanghina grape from which the white Falerno is born. The reference to the past is always enriched by reinterpretations and modernizations through the use of pioneering tools. Innovation here is not limited to technology, it is the result of a creative thought that makes the territory and men their strength.
